Shanghai Shenhua had its July 10 derby against Beijing Guoan postponed after Typhoon Bavi (the 9th named storm of the year) forced officials to delay the match, with a new date yet to be announced. The shift tightens the club’s schedule as it chases a title in the second half of the season.
Why was the match postponed?
On July 10, the Shanghai regional authority issued a notice stating that Typhoon Bavi would bring heavy rain and strong winds to the area. For safety reasons, the league moved the Shanghai Shenhua vs. Beijing Guoan fixture to a later date and promised to update fans and clubs via official channels as soon as possible.
How does this hurt Shanghai Shenhua?
Fans argue the delay favors Guoan. Their injured stars—Zhang Xizhe, Wang Gang and Li Lei—have largely recovered this season, and the extra time gives them a better chance to return. Shenhua, however, sees key players like Guy, Long Ge and Jin Shunkai ruled out for the remainder of the campaign, while naturalised forward Li Ke has just finished surgery and cannot play soon. If Guoan’s injured men become match‑fit before the rescheduled derby, Shenhua’s attacking options will be further limited.
What practical problems does the schedule clash create?
Beijing Guoan is set to host Liaoning Ironmen on July 17, only a week after the original derby date. Fitting a make‑up game between those fixtures would be tight, and Guoan may reject a mid‑week slot. Meanwhile, Shenhua’s Chen Jin‑yi, Te Xie‑la and La Tang have each already collected three yellow cards; another booking before the rescheduled match would trigger a suspension, weakening both defense and attack.
Are there any upside possibilities?
The postponement isn’t entirely negative. Striker Minero, who was injured in the 70th minute of the original Guoan clash, was reported in a June press conference to be ready to return by mid‑July. If the make‑up game is set after that window, Minero could feature in a crucial moment, adding firepower to Shenhua’s lineup. The club also enjoys recent good form—Wu Xi was named CSL Player of the Week in round 17, and La Tang leads the league’s scoring chart—so the team may still capitalize on the extra preparation time.
